Live performance of Braai4Heritage song

Two groups, and two individual artists perform the Braai4Heritage song “Our Heritage”. Multiple Grammy award winners, Soweto Gospel Choir recently received a lifetime achievement award at the South African Music Awards (SAMA’s). Die Heuwels Fantasties won the ‘Afrikaans alternative album’ award at the same event. HHP’s ‘Dumela’ was nominated for best rap album, and JR’s ‘Colourful’ was also nominated for best rap album. With this all-star cast, the success of the Braai Day song “Our Heritage” is no surprise. The song has only been performed live once, and this is the video of that performance.

Rave version of the Braai Day song

By now everybody knows the Braai Day song, Our Heritage, performed by various South Africans artists namely Die Heuwels Fantasties, JR, HHP and Soweto Gospel Choir. What you did not know, and what I did not know either, is that there is a rave remix of the song available. Hunter Kennedy, guitarist of Die Heuwels Fantasties was emailed by a gentleman by the name of Walter Davidson Anderson. David went to the effort of making a remix of the song. Hunter promptly emailed this song to Pierre Greeff, lead singer of Die Heuwels, and Pierre emailed it to me. According to Pierre this style of music is known as “french rave”.

Die Heuwels, pitching the official adoption of Braai4Heritage into the national agenda to parliament.

To download the “french rave” version of the Braai Day song, take this link. The download is free, obviously. If you are a DJ or other type of musical person and need the mp3 in a bigger format, you can email Walter Davidson Anderson at WeKilledJR@gmail.com and he will send it to you in a bigger format. However, he assures me the download here is sufficient for normal people with normal speakers.

If you still have not downloaded the multi award winning original Braai Day song, “Our Heritage”, you can downloaded the mp3, for free here, before or after you have watched the music video here.

The official remix of “Our Heritage” is currently in production. I asked rapper JR, who performs in the original song, and is also currently quite famous for his songs “Show Dem” and “Make da Circle Bigger” to take charge of this process. As soon as its ready, it will be available right here, to download for free. With all these famous people doing their bit to have South Africa Braai4Heritage on 24 September, you should probably ask yourself at some stage whether you are doing your bit.

Lyrics for the Braai4Heritage (National Braai Day) song ‘Our Heritage’

After filling my mailbox with requests for it, here are the lyrics for the Braai4Heritage (National Braai Day) song ‘Our Heritage’ – Featuring: Die Heuwels is Fantasties, Soweto Gospel Choir, HHP & JR.

Verse 1
The spring has arrived in Southern Africa
Not a cloud in the sky
Only flames in our eyes
As if everybody seems to know what time it is
Time for a braai
It’s time to have some fun
Chorus
I hear those voices until late at night
All together and we feel all right, all right
I see their faces in the golden light
All together and we feel all right, all right
Feeling Alright, hope you feeling alright people…
Verse 2
We stand united at the bonfire
We raise our glasses to the clear, blue sky
Tell me your story and I’ll tell you mine
Things will be better and I’m feeling fine
Chorus
I hear those voices until late at night
All together and we feel all right, all right
I see their faces in the golden light
All together and we feel all right, all right
I’m alright, are you?
Bridge
Try picturing a whole lotta people out at my place.
Everybody chilling. Re dibusa(getting down) by the fire place.
I’ll be in the back. Marinating on the braai vleis
Beer’s in the KEG, Pierre is bringing out the wine case
Its a known phrase,O jo re rata go braaya (we love to braai)
If you got no space chessa nyama o kaya (you can go to a public braaing spot)
If you’re not disgraced, say it loud “BRAAI DAY IS MY DAY”
Even ka labone(even on a thursday) I treat it like its a friday…
So it’s a fly (so it’s a fly day)
We call it a braai day e ne we do it our way
Cause it’s so mzanzi
Happy times are so naturalle in our county
Re rata sunshine
Pull out your smiles come on lets have a fun time
I’ll call Jabba and SGC cause in SA Die Heuwels is so Fantasties!
Chorus
I hear those voices until late at night
All together and we feel all right, all right
I see their faces in the golden light
All together and we feel all right, all right
I hear those voices x4
All together and we feel all right, all right x4
Braai please!!

Right, there you go. That’s it. So run along to the shower, and sing the correct words this time.

Music video of the braaiday song “Our Heritage”

Within the short space of only a week the official Braai Day song (Our Heritage) has been downloaded over 3500 times from our website; this is no small feat if you take into account that the song was only played on radio for the first time 3 days ago. It is therefore only fitting that we now present you with the official music video for Our Heritage, as shot on location while recording the song in a Johannesburg studio.

Braai Day song downloads hit 3000 mark!

Tuesday saw the official launch of the Braai Day song, called “Our Heritage” for free download from this site.  The website developers told me this morning that the song has already been downloaded more than 3000 times, in the short space of 3 days! The music men and women at Soft Light City tell me that this is some sort of record. I told them it’s not, because it’s not finished. It’s 3000 and counting.

We cannot really say where this whole this is going at the moment. As with the original idea of gathering all South Africans around fires, it’s simply spinning out of control (in a good way.)

At this point of time, no one for sure knows all the words of the songs yet, as the rappers were so of the hook that even they cannot remember exactly what they sang about braaing. The official music video is currently in production and will be released online shortly.

Braai anthem “Our Heritage” released

In December last year I went to a birthday party in Cape Town. At this party I met the artists of the bands AKing as well as Die Heuwels Fantasties. We talked quite a bit about braaiday, as they were all big supporters of the concept. A few rounds later the idea was born to create a song about this day on which all South Africans unite around fires. About a month later I had the privilege to attend a concert by multiple Grammy winners The Soweto Gospel Choir. My crazy idea that night of getting the Gospel Choir involved in this project was made a reality by Woodchopper and Die Heuwels Fantasties putting in the hard yards over the past few months. These boys also suggested getting rappers HHP and JR on board. An inspired decision, I am sure you will agree. Pieter van der Lugt, who wrote the words for the title song to the 1980’s Voëlvry tour, graciously agreed to write the lyrics, and the production was done by Johhny de Ridder. The end result today is a song written, performed and produced by as diverse a crowd of people as you will only find in South Africa. You can download the song free of charge by following the link on the homepage. If you are a DJ and need it in an even bigger megabyte form, please get in touch and we will gladly supply you with it, again, free of charge.

If you like it, help us by getting it to number one on a few radio stations by, well, requesting it. Video recordings were made during the production of the song, and a music video will be released shortly. Visit the website for updates on this matter.
